Gap
Gap was founded in 1969 by Donald and Doris Fisher in San Francisco, offering denim and casualwear. It launched its own private-label products in 1972 and went public in 1976. Gap Inc expanded globally, acquiring Banana Republic in 1983 and launching Old Navy in 1994. Gap entered the UK market in 1987. In October 2020, Gap announced the strategic review of its company-operated Gap business in Europe. Drapers exclusively revealed that it would close its 81 stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. In September 2021 Next formed a joint venture to operate Gap’s UK and Ireland ecommerce business across the Next Total Platform and to host Gap-branded shop-in-shops. Next owns 51% of the joint venture, while Gap owns 49%. Globally, Gap operates around 2,600 stores as of 2024 and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Its headquarters is in San Francisco.
