Costelloe<\/a>\u2019s family announced the news on 22 November, saying he had died in London, \u201csurrounded by his wife and seven children\u201d.<\/p>\n

They added: \u201cPaul has always been so grateful for the support you have all shown over his more than 40 years at the forefront of fashion. Our deepest thanks for the outpouring of love and tributes as we go through this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Costelloe was born in Dublin in 1945 and studied at the Grafton Academy of Fashion Design before moving to Paris to study haute couture.<\/p>\n

He set up his own label Paul Costelloe Collections in 1979, and presented collections at London Fashion Week, as well as in Paris, Milan and New York.<\/p>\n

In 1983 Costelloe was appointed personal designer to Diana, Princess of Wales – a position he held until her death in 1997.<\/p>\n

He also collaborated with Irish department store chain Dunnes Stores and was the closing designer for the inaugural Ireland Fashion Week in October this year.<\/p>\n

The British Fashion Council described him as \u201ca much loved and long standing figure in British fashion\u201d.<\/p>\n

It added: \u201cHis collections consistently radiated an energy and style that celebrated joy, elegance, and the art of dressing up for any occasion.<\/p>\n

\u201cPaul Costelloe was a dedicated supporter of the British Fashion Council over his more than 40 years of presenting on the catwalks of London Fashion Week. His creativity, warmth and vision will be profoundly missed and our thoughts are with his family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Womenswear label Richards Radcliffe, founded by former creative director of Crew Clothing and Ghost, Tess Richards, and former senior designer at Jigsaw and Mulberry, Kat Radcliffe, said: \u201cPaul was the only designer to have shown at every London Fashion Week since its inception over 40 years ago (\u2026) Our sympathies to all who loved him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Menswear specialist Simon Berwin said: “Paul has been a wonderful talented proud Irishman who charmed his way through the industry for many decades. Honest, creative, maverick and hard working, Paul never disappointed.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
