“I can’t remember the last time we had a normal year of supply chain,” said Jones when addressing the raft of uncertainties that have plagued the sector since 2020 \u2013 from the Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>, to Brexit<\/a>, the war in Ukraine<\/a>, the cost of living crisis<\/a> and now the Middle East conflict<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I think companies are now waking up to feeling that these changes are now a more common occurrence,” he told the audience, noting the importance of agility in today’s market.<\/p>\n

“It can still be a hard decision [for retailers] to make as to where to be flexible while being in control of the destiny of your company. It is not easy to strip some of that cost out.”<\/p>\n

With an eye to the importance of automation, he added: “Automation was a bit like AI a couple of years ago, people thought it was just a buzzword. I think the biggest challenge is asking, ‘When is automation relevant for your business?’ It is great to talk about it but there is no point doing it if there is no benefit.”<\/p>\n

Speaking on the importance of data within the supply chain, Jones said that AI is of no benefit to retailers if they do not have the data to support it.<\/p>\n

“Data is the new gold in the supply chain, you cannot do anything without data,” he said. “AI won’t help you without data.”<\/p>\n

Jones explained that DSV has helped retailers create value out of\u00a0 returns, transforming them from a pain point to a positive.<\/p>\n

“The biggest aim of when it [product] comes back is how do you get it out again via any means possible? Whether that is stores, discounters or reselling it as new by putting it back in as stock. Many businesses just sit on it because they don’t know how to get rid of it. Once you get it in, you need to get it out.<\/p>\n

“It is really that final decision-making process and finding the right time to change [thinking around returns]. You can put that question off forever but actually we have definitely found a shift change in more people being driven to change and now having to do it, rather than needing to do it.”<\/p>\n

Jones added that it remains critical for retailers to have a “good grip” of\u00a0 business from a data point of view when looking to outsource operations, with transparency and honesty remaining the key to successful partnerships.<\/p>\n

“One of the biggest challenges is that people want to hold things back but the more transparent and open you can be with a 3PL, the better outcome you are going to get,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It is finding a 3PL which fits the culture of your business. Go and meet the ops people, those that are going to meet with your business day in day out and see if they culturally fit.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
