{"id":461872,"date":"2026-04-23T10:34:55","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T09:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/?p=461872"},"modified":"2026-04-23T10:34:55","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T09:34:55","slug":"how-nobodys-child-and-sosandar-are-navigating-the-supply-chain-regulation-minefield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/subscriber-only-content\/how-nobodys-child-and-sosandar-are-navigating-the-supply-chain-regulation-minefield","title":{"rendered":"How Nobody&#8217;s Child and Sosandar are navigating the supply chain regulation &#8216;minefield&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/topics\/supply-chain\/drapers-supply-chain-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drapers Supply Chain Summit<\/a>, on Wednesday (22 April) at London\u2019s Soho Hotel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/tag\/sosandar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sosandar<\/a>&#8216;s<span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">\u00a0Crewe<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/companies\/directory\/nobodys-child\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobody&#8217;s Child<\/a>&#8216;s Grogan<\/span><\/span> said uncertainty around legislation,\u00a0including evolving requirements such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/insight\/analysis\/the-a-z-of-dpp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digital product passports (DPP)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/news\/packaging-epr-to-cost-industry-billions-says-brc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extended producer responsibility (EPR)<\/a>, is making it difficult for brands to prioritise investment and take decisive action.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"596\" data-end=\"784\">Crewe described the current landscape as \u201ca bit of a minefield\u201d, adding that the biggest challenge is \u201ctrying to see through the mist\u201d around what businesses are required to do and when.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"980\">\u201cWith each brand [and] retailer, there\u2019s a different software, a different [product lifecycle management]. If everybody\u2019s going to have a different version of a DPP, it\u2019s going to become incredibly complex,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1183\">Data is emerging as the critical foundation for compliance, according to both speakers, particularly as regulation expands across areas including traceability, sustainability reporting and circularity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1432\">Grogan said: \u201cThe product data is as important as the product,\u201d urging brands to treat data with the same rigour as design and manufacturing: \u201cIf you have the right data in the right place at the right time, your life will just be so much easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1434\" data-end=\"1763\">At <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Nobody\u2019s Child<\/span><\/span>, this has meant investing early in DPP capabilities, scaling from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/insight\/analysis\/the-a-z-of-dpp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small pilots in 2023<\/a> to more than 1,200 SKUs with traceability and product lifecycle data for its autumn\/winter 25 collection.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1434\" data-end=\"1763\">However, Grogan warned the process is far from straightforward, with \u201csomething new that pops up to be able to fix\u201d on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"2085\">A key challenge has been bringing suppliers on the journey, particularly when requesting deeper levels of transparency: \u201cIf you just ask them to tell you everything about their supply chain, they get really skittish,\u201d she said, adding that success depends on positioning it as a partnership rather than \u201ca prescription\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2087\" data-end=\"2311\">Crewe echoed this, noting that supplier concerns are often driven by cost pressures. \u201cThe biggest initial concern is, how much is this going to cost me?\u201d he said, particularly at a time when margins are already under strain.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2313\" data-end=\"2571\">Both speakers warned against knee-jerk investment decisions in response to unconfirmed regulation. However, they also acknowledged the tension between waiting for clarity and the need to act. \u201cYou can\u2019t stand still,\u201d Crewe added, highlighting the importance of ongoing education across leadership teams to build understanding of both compliance requirements and long-term business risk.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2862\" data-end=\"3132\">EPR is already pushing brands to rethink product design and circularity. Grogan said it is driving greater focus on material composition, recyclability and business models such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/insight\/the-industry-view\/resale-rental-repair-how-to-unlock-your-recommerce-potential\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resale, rental and repair<\/a>, which can help reduce waste and offset future compliance costs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3134\" data-end=\"3442\">At the same time, both speakers called for stronger government support, including clearer communication and standardised frameworks. Grogan suggested a simplified, \u201cbullet-pointed\u201d approach to guidance, while Crewe highlighted the need for \u201cone version of the truth\u201d to reduce complexity across the industry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3444\" data-end=\"3564\">\u201cIt\u2019s about making it easier for everybody,\u201d Crewe said. \u201cWe all know why we need to do this \u2014 so why make it difficult?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3566\" data-end=\"3830\">Beyond regulation, ongoing geopolitical disruption is compounding the challenge. Similarly to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/topics\/supply-chain\/drapers-supply-chain-summit\/josephs-playbook-for-managing-supply-chain-disruption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph COO and CFO Danny Brown<\/a>, who also spoke at the Drapers Supply Chain Summit, both Crewe and Grogan reported rising freight costs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/news\/suppliers-warn-of-textile-price-hikes-amid-middle-east-conflict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">material price increases<\/a> and supply chain delays linked to instability in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3832\" data-end=\"4052\">Grogan said sustainability targets are also being impacted, with brands forced to rely more heavily on air freight: \u201cYou can create all of these policies, and then you just don\u2019t know what\u2019s around the corner,\u201d she told delegates.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4054\" data-end=\"4295\">Crewe added that retailers must work more collaboratively with suppliers to manage rising costs and capacity constraints: \u201cWithout our suppliers, we\u2019re nothing,\u201d he said, calling for earlier decision-making and more flexible ways of working.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4297\" data-end=\"4495\">Looking ahead, both speakers agreed that businesses must balance compliance with commercial realities, focusing on building strong data foundations while remaining agile in an uncertain environment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4497\" data-end=\"4631\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Grogan said: \u201cGet the data, tidy your house, and then you can invite the guests around \u2014 whether that\u2019s DPP, EPR or anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking at the\u00a0Drapers Supply Chain Summit, on Wednesday (22 April) at London\u2019s Soho Hotel, Sosandar&#8216;s\u00a0Crewe and Nobody&#8217;s Child&#8216;s Grogan said uncertainty around legislation,\u00a0including evolving requirements such as digital product passports (DPP) and extended producer responsibility (EPR), is making it difficult for brands to prioritise investment and take decisive action.
