It seems as though, and I hope I&#8217;m wrong, but they are letting the tide come in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are not doing enough to help out and when everyone&#8217;s business rates are going up, there aren&#8217;t enough incentives or tax breaks to take on staff and do improvements. I don&#8217;t think the last five to 10 years of government have really been that bothered about independent business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hoggett hailed the success of his company&#8217;s tenure, despite the raft of challenges in recent years: &#8220;Covid was the most significant [challenge] because of the lack of support from the government, we are a limited company so we didn&#8217;t get much support and financially that was a great burden. We&#8217;ve also had the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/news\/ukraine-conflict\">Ukraine war<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/news\/further-uncertainty-for-businesses-as-pm-resigns\">Liz Truss<\/a> and now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/topics\/supply-chain\/editors-comment-navigating-supply-chain-chaos-together\">Iran war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is too much against you [as an independent businesses] and we might get a different government in 2029 who may look at things differently. There is a lot governments can do [for small businesses] of any colour [left or right], so we will have to see what happens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The thing about independents is, we always try to be a bit different and move things on a bit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We inadvertently break all the rules but we attract people that want to have a nice [shopping] experience and want to buy nice things and we are very experienced at what we do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Hoggett said that while the market may be &#8220;dwindling&#8221;, there will &#8220;always be a place for independents&#8221;: &#8220;Not everyone wants to shop with the big players but it is still a niche market [independent fashion].&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_462556\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 650px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-462556 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/30233944\/IMG_1812.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/30233944\/IMG_1812.webp 640w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/30233944\/IMG_1812-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/30233944\/IMG_1812-440x330.webp 440w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/30233944\/IMG_1812-230x173.webp 230w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/30233944\/IMG_1812-150x113.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Top performing J&amp;B Menswear brand Fred Perry<\/p>\n\t<p class=\"inline_image_source\" style=\"max-width: 650px;\"><p class=\"empty_inline_source\"><\/p><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Focused on appealing to customers opting for the &#8220;smarter end of casual&#8221; and maintaining its strictly non-discount ethos, Hoggett said J&amp;B Menswear is laser-focused on European and &#8220;independent&#8221; brands moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to get away from big discounted brands,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Our plans for the next year or two is focusing on European brands because we won&#8217;t be in competition with their own UK websites because they either don&#8217;t exist or is it not financially viable for customers to buy from.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A total of 65% of J&amp;B Menswear&#8217;s sales take place in-store, with top performing brands including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/news\/fred-perry-readies-soho-store\">Fred Perry<\/a> and Danish brand Matinique.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;People appreciate what we do, they love it,&#8221; Hoggett told Drapers in the retailer&#8217;s 60th year of trading.
