Topshop
In 1964, Raymond Montague Burton launched Topshop as part of retail company The Burton Group. It launched within the basement of Sheffield-based store Peter Robinson, however by 1974, Topshop had left the basement and established itself as a stand-alone store. Its retail footprint continued to grow, and in 1994 Topshop’s flagship shop opened in Oxford Circus. In 1997, The Burton group split up and restructured into the Arcadia group, purchasing the likes of Miss Selfridge and Wallis. Sir Philip Green bought the Arcadia group in 2002 for £850m. However, in 2021 Topshop stores, along with other Arcadia Group brands, closed after the company went into administration. Shortly after Asos acquired Topshop, Topman and Miss Selfridge. Now the brand is set to relaunch with a standalone website –Topshop.com – and make a high street return.
